The beginnings of Werther's Original
Werther's Original (formerly Werthers Echte ) is a brand of caramel candies . The name refers to the small town of Werther , where August Oberwelland founded the Werther sugar confectionery factory and today's August Storck KG in 1903 , and where the confectioner Gustav Nebel is said to have invented the candy six years later. According to the manufacturer, Werther's Original is now available in over 80 countries and is Storck's most successful brand worldwide.
Caramel candies have been one of the products of the Werther sugar confectionery factory from the very beginning. Brand names were still uncommon at the time; Consumers named the mostly unlabeled products according to the manufacturer or place of manufacture. Storck's first branded candy, and according to the company the first branded candy ever in Germany, was the “1 Pfennig RIESEN” introduced in 1934.
In 1969, Storck introduced the “Werthers Echte” brand. It was one of several well-known brands that the company brought onto the market at that time. Today, the city of Werther and the Werther's Original brand only have a few points of contact. The Storck company moved to the neighboring one between 1945 and 1949 Halle (Westphalia) and no longer operates a production facility in Werther. The advertising for Werther's Original traditionally plays with small-town motifs, but does not use any photos from the town that gives it its name. In Werther itself, the brand is no more present today than anywhere else. Werther presents himself in memory of the painter Peter August Böckstiegel as “Böckstiegel City” and in no way refers to the well-known candies. Continue reading...
